Online play confirmed for Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The latest Super Smash Bros. Brawl website update has confirmed something gamers have been desperate to hear for a long time - that the upcoming beat-em-up will support online play around the world.
Players will have the choice to battle with a registered friend or with a random anybody from any region of the world. However, it is explained that the further apart two players are, the more likely it is that the bout will not run as smoothly as if they were in the same neighbourhood.
During battle, you’ll be able to taunt your opponent with short messages that will have been entered before the brawl begins. These can then be bellowed at your opponent by pressing one of the four main directions on the Wii Remote’s control pad. However, this mode is disabled during “With Anyone” match-ups. Nintendo’s examples include the hurtful phrases, “Oops!” and “Want more?” …We’re sure we can think of more colourful examples that are bound to be used.
Nintendo explains that they’re working on more ways to utilise the Wi-Fi connection in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and that we’ll just have to wait and see.
Unfortunately (and going by one of the screenshots above), the restrictive Friends Code system will be implemented. Sigh.

The pre-made text messages are a bit of a turn-off , but this should still be pretty good. Now I’ll actually get to fight people instead of smashing around CPUs 24/7.
