EU/AU VC: Nintendo unleashes 1st Neo-Geo game in Europe today
Back on Monday Nintendic revealed that Nintendo would be unleashing the power of the Neo Geo system on the Virtual Console in Europe in the very near future. With Japan due to get the system this month, it was presumed we would receive it definitely before Christmas. However, this morning Nintendo Europe has given us a very nice surprise indeed!
Here we are on Friday, 4th October 2007 and Wii owners are now able to grab some new classic action, as the first ever Neo Geo game has now graced the popular download service.
“Kicking off this week’s Virtual Console treats is Fatal Fury, originally release for NEO GEO. Launched in 1991, this is an action-packed beat ‘em up which helped to shape the genre. Players can choose from one of three playable fighters: Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi, each with their own unique moves. The aim of the game is to defeat a variety of foes on the way to a show-down with the South Town crime boss Geese Howard. Fatal Fury is available now for 900 Wii Points.“
But not only that, Nintendo has revealed that this week is a bumper release for Sega classics, starting with two games that finish off popular trilogies - Streets of Rage 3 and Golden Axe III:
“Next in this week’s line-up is the incredible Streets of Rage 3, originally released on SEGA MEGA DRIVE in 1994. The Syndicate and sinister Mr X are back and tormenting the city once again with life-like robots which have taken the place of various city officials. It’s up to well-loved heroes Axel, Skate and Blaze to foil this plot with their mind-blowing fighting abilities. Streets of Rage 3 features more weapons, control moves and faster gameplay than previous games in the series, as well as secret characters and multiple endings to unlock. Available to download on Virtual Console for 800 Wii Points, this is one game you definitely won’t want to miss.
If you feel like embarking on an epic quest, then this week’s Virtual Console has just the game for you with Golden Axe III, the final title in the Golden Axe series. Once again a peaceful kingdom is under threat from the Prince of Darkness who has stolen the mystical Golden Axe and rendered all of its warrior’s harmless thanks to an evil curse. But all is not lost; one warrior has broken free of the evil curse and can fight the prince to regain the Golden Axe and save his kingdom. Players can select one of three characters, a giant, a panther or a sword-wielding human in this classic one–or two-player action title. Golden Axe III was originally released in 1993 on the SEGA MEGA DRIVE and is available now to download for 800 Wii Points.“
And you would presume that that would be all, since three games is the usual average in terms of releases. However, Nintendo is going hell for leather this week, bombarding us with treat after treat and making the Wii cry as its internal memory rapidly fills up. Hopefully you all have a plentiful supply of SD storage cards to transfer older games off you Wii in order to create enough space for these cracking games as well:
“Also up for grabs this week is the follow up to Thunder Blade, Super Thunder Blade. Originally released in 1990 on SEGA MEGA DRIVE, players take control of a military helicopter as they repel guerrilla armies determined to take over the world. Players take on submarines, tanks and fighter planes in this fast paced shooter and will need to skillfully manage their aircraft to defeat their foe and avoid all the hazards enemies throw at them. So get your flying goggles on and download Super Thunder Blade for 800 Wii Points.
Last but not least, players can also download 1993 SEGA MEGA DRIVE title Landstalker Treasures of King Nole. Players assume the part of Nigel, an elvish treasure-hunter, who after hearing of the legendary treasure of King Nole, undertakes a quest to claim it as his own. His journey takes him through villages, caves and dungeons as our hero fights battles against the treacherous Duke Mercator, who is also searching for the treasure. Landstalker Treasures of King Nole is available now for 800 Wii Points.“
There you have it, five amazing new / old games for you to play on your Wii thanks to the wonderful Virtual Console service. Be sure to let us know which of these new releases you pick up. Stick around on Nintendic for further updates…
