Nintendo: Listen, Wii does not need hard drive

The Nintendo Wii is currently the only next-generation console without a substantial hard disk drive. It’s 512MB internal memory pales in comparison to the clout of the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3’s, but despite growing Virtual Console support, WiiWare on the horizon and gamers who store pictures, movies and other media on the machine, Nintendo is still adamant that the Wii doesn’t need a hard drive.

“The way that we look at it is, we really don’t want people storing every single game they buy on their drive,” said NOA PR manager, Eric Walter, reports CVG.

“When you buy a game, it’s yours forever, so you can delete it, and go back and get it at any time you want. In a way, we liken it to putting music on your iPod; you listen to it for a while, and then you get tired of it, and you pull it off, and you put some new stuff on.”

Yet despite the time and effort it takes to transfer data between the Wii’s internal drive and SD cards and the arrival of WiiWare, Walter is confident that players need not be concerned:

“A lot of the games for WiiWare that have been submitted so far are smaller in size, so they’re not gonna take up a ton of your drive,” he added.

What are your thoughts? Are you struggling for space on your Wii as we speak?

So far hasn’t been a problem for me yet, despite downloading tons of VC games. Might pose a problem in the future when more games are released that spit out more data. Thrashing the cd-rom and stuffing every bit into buffers might strain the system. But who knows.

For me its quite easy, I get bored of a game, I put it on my SD card, and I download a new one…

When even my SD card would be full (ive downloaded a lot and theres at this point nothing on it) I will download everything from my SD card to my computer, and I will have all the space i’d ever need…

Easy as that…

NOTHING on the wii uses a lot of memory, so its all ok… at least thats how I see it…

I AGREE WITH NINTENDO! :P

I have a mixed opinion with this.
Because I would like to get to a point where I actually have every channel block on my Wii full - I don’t do much downloading because there’s just alot of titles I’m not interested in or have played before.
But like Eric Walter says, if I get bored of something, just move the saved data to my SD card, delete the channel and find a new game.
It’s possible though that they may just build 1 GB Wiis in the future, but I feel a different Wii console color will come sooner than that.

Id like to see a Hard Drive for downloadable game content, ie new cars etc, or atleast have an update so the wii can use the SD card like a harddrive!

yeah. i agree that you can just take the things you dont use and put them on sd cards or delete them. but it is such a hassle. if it had a hard drive u wouldnt even need 2 worry bout that stff. also if the wii had a hard drive then the internet channel could be much better. u wouldnt run into “out of memory” screens and a website could remember what u loaded b4. another reason is that there could b downloadable content in games . so then instead of getting board of the game it might have downloadable expansions or updates giving it a longer lasting appeal than a regular game.
i am not a bad typer, but i typed this on my wii (no keyboard)

Yeah a Hard Drive would help with the Wii so you could download more content etc..
