id Software chats Wolfenstein, Quake Arena and Doom DS
Id Software and Nintendo haven’t always been the best of friends. You could argue that the low point between both companies came with the release of 1992’s Wolfenstein 3D for the Super Nintendo. Concerns from Nintendo’s American arm meant the removal of blood and Nazi symbols, something that reviewers (and Id presumably) felt detracted from the game significantly. However, with both the Wii and DS selling so well, attitudes are changing. With the upcoming launch of id Mobile, the firm’s Katherine Anna Kang and John Carmack have been discussing their plans for Nintendo platforms - good news, indeed.

Asked by Wired about the projects id’s mobile division would be working on, Katherine Anna Kang revealed that the firm would be working on Wolfenstein for the Nintendo DS, potentially a Quake Arena DS and even a number of original concepts:
AK: It looks like this year we’re going to be working on Wolfenstein for the cell phone, and we’d like to do a simultaneous release with the DS and the cell phone. And we’re working on potentially a Quake Arena DS project, and we have a few brand new IPs that we’d like to get out there but that probably won’t get out until the following year.
Carmack adds later in the chat:
JC: From my perspective, another aspect that’s kind of nice is, before we bring one of the major id titles to a new platform, before we do a Doom or a Wolfenstein on the DS, it was really nice to be able to take Orcs and Elves, which people don’t really have any preconceived notions about what the graphics are going to be like and so on, to get a feel for the platform. And then we can go ahead and develop, whether it’s Doom or Wolfenstein or what on the DS next, and now we’ve got some experience, we’re going to be able to do a really nice job at it.
Asked whether Id Software would be creating a Doom title for the Nintendo DS, John Carmack was unsure, citing that perhaps the DS wasn’t the best platform for a Mature rated game:
AK: We’ve been talking about it…
JC: It’s a topic under discussion right now. One of the data points that I’m not sure about is whether the DS can actually have a highly successful Mature-rated game. And there’s a few titles that we’re keeping an eye on to see if that works on there.
Later on in the interview, the pair also hint at the possibility that Orcs and Elves could be a possibility for the Nintendo Wii.
Very interesting titbits, indeed. Which Id Software title would you most like to appear on a Nintendo platform?
