The Terminator returns to the world of videogames
Owners of the ‘Terminator’ franchise, The Halcyon Company, has revealed that it is to form its own gaming subsidiary in order to make a brand new game adaptation of the outfit’s forthcoming fourth movie in the series, “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins”, which is due for its first release in the Summer of 2009.
The game is set to be made available across all current formats, which includes the next-generation line-up of consoles, PC and mobile devices, and the company hopes to have it ready for retail at around the same time as the film’s release in just under two years time. Halcyon co-CEOs Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson are set to become co-chairmen of the company’s gaming division, whilst Peter Levin (formerly of Disney and also a Bellrock Media executive) is due to take the lead at ‘Halcyon Games’, working as the acting Chief Executive Officer. In addition to this, in the role of Vice President Production will be Cos Lazouras, most recently with Vin Diesel’s game production house, Tigon Studios.
Since the track record of the Terminator games is patchy at best, Levin has gone on record to say that the privately financed Halcyon has now chosen to form its own game division since previous outsourcing of the “Terminator” license to an outside publisher has led to the company being able “to control our own destiny.” He continued by stating that “When you own the intellectual property and have the creative control, you can make sure you are publishing a top-tier video game that will satisfy the needs of the marketplace.”
The development of the new game version of “Terminator” has been on the boil now for several months, with Halcyon placing staff amongst the film production crew in Budapest from since the very start in order to keep the standards as high as possible.
Derek Anderson stated, “We don’t want the game to be the stepchild to the film. They are of equal importance, and we want both to be of the same quality and be the same compelling experience.”
As well as “Terminator”, though, Halcyon Games has also secured the first-look rights to the works of famed science fiction writer Philip K. Dick and executives have confirmed that the team is looking at bringing out titles based on the Dick books commencing in 2010. On top of this, Halcyon Games is even planning on creating its own original IP in the long run.
Anderson concluded that Halcyon will look to partner with an established publisher for distribution, and that given the quality of the “Terminator” franchise, “I don’t think finding distribution is going to be much of an exercise.”
