Nintendo DS breaks UK record, Mario Galaxy rides high
Nintendo has seen fantastic results with its DS platform since launching the system in Europe back in March 2005, but nobody could have foreseen the amount of records it would continue to break at this stage in its lifetime. However, despite the shock of it, the DS Lite has now broken another amazing UK record.
The official Chart Track update was released yesterday evening for the UK, showing the latest movers and shakers in the world of gaming in the largest market in Europe. The sale tracking company’s initial report merely stated that the DS hardware had had a record-breaking week that helped keep the Dr. Kawashima duo of Brain Training and More Brain Training at the top end of the chart, with the original game selling more in this one week than it has ever done before (since launching in May 2006!), actually rising a whopping 30% in sales over the seven-day period, placing it at No.2 in the Individual Formats Top 40, which is ranked by units sold, just shy of Assassin’s Creed’s performance on Xbox 360. Meanwhile, More Brain Training creeped its way back up to the No.5 position as the Xbox 360 version of Activision’s Call of Duty 4 crashed down four places to No.6.
This morning, UK trade publication MCV has been told by Nintendo that official Chart Track data shows that over 191,000 units of the Nintendo DS Lite were sold last week alone, completely shredding previous records, and easily out-pacing any other hardware format for the week. The previous record was held by the PlayStation Portable when it launched right back on 1st September, 2005, selling roughly 185,000 units that week.
A Nintendo spokesperson very reservedly stated to MCV this morning that: “We’re obviously delighted to be able to announce this. Momentum has been increasing on DS sales and to achieve the highest weekly sales figure ever in the history of the games market is fantastic.”
But that will not be the only reason for Nintendo to celebrate, as in the face of stiff competition, Super Mario Galaxy has kept itself strong, holding onto the No.3 spot in the Individual Formats Top 40, just ahead of new release ‘Mass Effect’ on Xbox 360. Another big new release for the week was Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games from Sega on Wii, which entered at an impressively high No.7 position. Unfortunately the Wii edition of Guitar Hero III did not have the same starting impact as it did in the US on Wii, failing to make the Top 40, despite a No.11 new entry position on the Wii Top 30. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is also quickly on its way out, falling as far down as No.19 on the Wii-specific chart, and only just keeping itself above the Wii version of Need for Speed: ProStreet, which is new in at No.20.
Despite the massive week for DS sales, there were some disappointing chart placings for new entries on the format. The heavily advertised trio of Mario Party DS, My Word Coach and Sight Training all failed to enter the Individual Formats Top 40, only entering the DS Top 30 itself at No.17, No.20 and No.22, respectively. However, DS software usually receives a hefty boost in its second week of release, so perhaps the continued TV campaigns will help lift them higher by next Monday’s update.
