Square Enix president takes crack at Nintendo’s casual gaming strategy
While the explosion in the casual gaming market has benefited Nintendo (and a few notable third party developers) enormously, there appears to be raising concern amongst those companies who have traditionally focussed on the hardcore gaming market. The president of one such firm, Square Enix, recently spoke out about his concerns, jibbing Nintendo in the process.
From a recent interview with GamesIndustry:
GI:What’s your analysis of the health of the Japanese games market at present?
Yoichi WadaIt’s haphazard growth, if you like. Nintendo has been doing really well, and DS particularly is enjoying a great boom. But when it comes to games for core gamers, it’s quite weak. Sooner or later core gamers will become impatient, and there’ll be a point where ‘real’ games will resume growth, but it’s not happening at the moment. However, for core games, the European and American markets are growing at enormous speed.
He still appears optimistic it seems, although we imagine that if the bubble of Nintendo’s expansion of the casual market is to burst, it couldn’t come quick enough for Square Enix.

Is this guy still stuck on Casual vs. Core players? I’ve followed Nintendo GC from begining to now and I see no such favoritism in those markets. Nintendo has been pouring out the same amount of games labeled for core today as they did for the GC.
You look at the GC games and it looks more like they weren’t being discriminant about players, but just made games.
