Last weekend we reported on the box art for the DS version of Assassin’s Creed (subtitled Altair’s Chronicles), which had been leaked onto the Internet and given us the first details of the game. Today, developer Ubisoft has officially unveiled the title.

Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles is the direct prequel to its Microsoft Xbox 360 bigger brother and aims to give players a deeper insight into the protagonist’s past history. As we discovered from the box art’s screenshots, Altair’s Chronicles will feature a fully 3D world set in four cities of the Crusade’s Middle East. Gamers will control Altair as he sword-fights, punches, flips and kicks his way through the brand new adventure.

“The success of Assassin’s Creed worldwide has been incredible and we’re excited to delve deeper into the story and bring it to the Nintendo DS,” said John Parkes, EMEA Marketing Director at Ubisoft. “Assassin’s Creed Altaïr’s Chronicles will be a title that resonates with those who played the console version as well as those who have yet to discover the secrets of Assassin’s Creed.”

With Assassin’s Creed on the Microsoft Xbox 360, Ubisoft pulled off a revolutionary feat in terms of gaming exploration and freedom. While we’re not quite expecting the same jump in the DS version, we’re hoping for nothing less than a competent 3D adventure. Check out the first official screenshots, sourced from IGN.
