We learnt from reports just the other day that Namco Bandai had re-named Family Ski to the somewhat catchier Wii Ski for a Western release. Now, however, the firm has officially announced the Wii Balance Board-compatible title for North America.

A revival of its Family Sports series, We Ski sees Namco Bandai taking a casual gaming take on traversing the snowy mountain slopes, on which are a variety of locations where players can meet characters, enter races and try their hand at challenges such as delivery of items or search and rescue missions.

There are a total of 20 races in We Ski, the same amount of slalom runs and five mogul events. On your travels (either as a pre-made character or your own Mii) you’ll be able to take souvenir snaps (100 can be saved in all) and trade them with friends via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

As for the all-important controls, the Wii Remote and Nunchuck are held at your side just like ski poles, with rotating them left and right determining your direction. Using the Balance Board in addition to the Remote and Nunchuck is said to require a little more practice, with steering determined by leaning to the left and right.

“We are thrilled to be the first publisher to offer a realistic and enjoyable skiing experience that can also support the new Wii Balance Board,” said Todd Thorson, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Namco Bandai Games America Inc. “Namco Bandai is working to entertain both casual gamers and hardcore enthusiasts with a recreation of a beloved sport and pastime.”

Namco Bandai states that We Ski will arrive this spring, although reports suggest this will be in May, alongside the release of Wii Fit.
