THQ announces All Star Cheer Squad for Wii and DS
We wouldn’t imagine a videogame based on cheerleading would be at the top of most male gamers’ must-have lists, but THQ certainly seems to think the fairer sex would enjoy it, as the firm has announced All Star Cheer Squad for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS.
The game follows an aspiring cheerleading squad member (clothes, facial features, hair and outfits all customisable) as they learn new routines, chants and eventually work their way up to captaining the team. The Nintendo Wii version will, as you’d expect, feature motion-sensing controls, but also be compatible with the Wii Balance Board - although how it will be used exactly has not yet been divulged. Our best guess is that THQ will attempt to incorporate some cheerleading dance steps into the mix.
In order to ensure that All Star Cheer Squad has the latest cheer action and top routines, world-renowned cheerleading choreographer Tony G (oh, him!, best known for his work in the Bring It On movies, has signed on as chief consultant for the game.
As for the Nintendo DS version of the game, it will follow a storyline that focuses on events at a cheerleading camp, where players will compete to trounce a rival team.
“With the explosive growth of the girls gaming market in recent years due to the continued success of Wii and DS, our ongoing goal is to stay at the cutting edge of that success by bringing a brand new property for this segment to these popular systems,” said Jim Huntley, director of global brand management, THQ. “We’re thrilled to introduce All Star Cheer Squad to the industry as a triple-a title that will get players involved in the action of what it takes to be an all star as well as make up their own unique cheer routines.”
