Smash Bros. Brawl broken? Nintendo is on the case

You may recall that a number of Japanese Nintendo Wii owners were left distraught earlier on this year, after their copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl just wouldn’t work. Nintendo blamed the issue on consoles with dusty lenses and offered a free fix to those affected. It looks like the problem is now also causing problems for North American players, but Nintendo is very much on the case. If you’ve been experiencing trouble, head inside for all the details on how to get everything sorted.

The following is lifted from a special web page that Nintendo has set up to help those players whose Super Smash Bros. Brawl discs won’t run in their Wii systems:

Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialized cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. (Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system.)

“How can I get this fixed and how long will it take?”
If you are experiencing disc read errors, please utilize the form below to request a repair order. Nintendo is upgrading inbound and outbound shipping to expedite the total repair process. Specific repair times will be provided as you fill out the repair form below. There is no cost for the repair or shipping. Please note: returning the game to the retail store will not solve the problem. So we encourage users who are experiencing issues with playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl to utilize this repair order process.

After filling in a form to identify yourself and your console, Nintendo will send you details on how to start the process of getting your Wii back up and running perfectly - and all free of charge.

It says, don’t get a new disc, cause it won’t work. Fill in the form, like the website says, get it cleaned up. Sweet.

Awesome that for just one game that the company will fix it for free and ship for free. You can’t ask for better customer service than that.

Well done.

the lens should be powerful enough in the first place to stop this from happening, never mind, at least they are sorting it for free. Does this include out-of-warranty systems!?

The first time i powered this game on I got the error message. At first i thought it was the update messing with it. Than i got it again about an hour into playing. The audio kicked out than i could still play than after a few seconds i got that error message. I haven’t seen it since though.

Stupid nintendo they just cant do anything right.

It happened to us and I can say I had one very disspointed son. I shipped mine back on Wednesday and hopefully should get it back by next Friday. They are paying for shipping both ways 2nd day fed ex. I have had my wii since they first came out back in nov 06. I think it affects the older systems as we took it to our friends and it worked on theirs which was purchased in december 07. The bad news is you have to ship the game with it so you can’t play it on someone elses wii.

I got smash on launch day at midnight, had to wait outside for 3 hours in the cold but I got it. Took it home and it wouldn’t play. Called up Nintendo and send it out on Sunday FedEx (FedEx explained that it would be sent monday since mail does not go on sunday). Still have not gotten it back, got a tracking number and it says it will come wensday.

So when Nintendo says 1 week don’t really expect 1 week. I was among the first to send it back and it will take (if it comes wens) 9 days. Anyone who didn’t send it back the first day will def have to wait till the ones sent in before yours are done… expect longer waits. Don’t be to mad at nintendo, 1 week is a ridiculously optimistic return time for any company today. My X-360 took over a month when I got the red ring of death, so 9 days isn’t really complainable.
