For a project that began as a class project by a Slovenian student, Line Rider has come a long way in the past couple of years, thanks much to its booming popularity as a free Flash game on the Internet. It is now being revamped for a release on the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS, and today we’ve come across the first screenshots as well as a slew of new details.

We learn today that Line Rider on the Nintendo Wii feature a story mode in which ’scumbag’ Chaz is up to no good, and it is down to you to defeat him and save your one true love, Bailey. Players must solve in excess of 40 mind-bending puzzles, scribbled by the world’s best Line Rider player, ‘TechDawg.’ Away from the Story Mode, there are the Freestyle and Puzzle Creator, the latter of which allows players to create challenges with targets and tokens on a map to test others - courses that can be uploaded and downloaded on the Nintendo DS.

In the ‘meat and potatoes’ of the gameplay, the newly built Line Rider will be far and away more detailed in terms of options over its free Internet counterpart. It is said to include a much larger tool base for creating scenery, the ability to include some colours, stunts and possibly sound, music, and voices. The new version will also allow for situations in which Bosh (the game’s character) may be able to reacquire his sled if he falls off, and features a “finish line” which will prevent the track from going on forever.

New features in the Nintendo Wii version of Line Rider, reports 1UP, include a video editor, multiple line riders on one track, extra graphical effects and extra line options. And for those worried that doodling with the Wii Remote and stylus will result in horrible wobbly lines, the new build will include a new ‘curve line’ tool, making the drawing of ramps and slopes much easier.

Line Rider is released for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS this summer.
