Five new WiiWare games announced: Tetris, Animal Panic, Lonpus, Ping-Pong, Bubble Wrap - first screens
Today looks to be have been a popular day for WiiWare announcements, not surprising since the download service launches in a matter of weeks in Japan - confirmed as March 25. After the jump we’ve got details of – count ‘em – four brand new titles lining up to battle for the hearts, minds and Wii Points of gamers, as well as the full Japanese launch line-up.
Tetris
In continuation of a trend that has seen Tetris being released on just about every videogaming format ever, Hudson Soft has confirmed that it is bringing the falling-block puzzler to Nintendo’s WiiWare service to Japan this summer. There aren’t many details at the moment, although an online mode for up to six players will be included.
From the first two screenshots we can deduce that your Mii will represent players online, and is that a co-operative mode with an extra-wide playing area that we spy in the second image? The fact that there is only one set of statistics (Time, Score, Lines, Level etc.) make us think that it may be so.
Animal Panic
In today’s second WiiWare announcement, Konami has confirmed that it is bringing a new puzzle game to the downloadable service, in the form of Animal Panic. Controlled exclusively with the Wii Remote, the object of the game is to erect fences to isolate a number of creatures, from sheep to chickens to giraffes, crocodiles and zebras.
Animal Panic will support between one and four players, with pairs of gamers given the chance to team up to play through various mini-games. Animal Panic is currently scheduled for release on the launch day of WiiWare in Japan on March 25, and will retail for 1000 Wii Points.
At present there is no information on a Western release.
Lonpos
Third out of the bag today is yet another puzzler, and it’s Genki’s Lonpos. There aren’t many details on Lonpos’ actual gameplay, although it’s pretty safe to suggest that matching up different (or taking away) coloured stones in some shape or another, is the way forward. Genki announced that there will be nine brain-aching packs to download, each containing twenty-five puzzles.
Playable by up to four gamers at a time, Lonpos will arrive at the launch of WiiWare in Japan on March 25.
Okiraku Ping Pong
Last but by no means least is Arc System Works’ Okiraku Ping Pong, which looks to offer exactly what it says on the tin - a simple table tennis experience in which up to two players can sweat it out against one another in a variety of sporting venues.
Bubble Wrap
Perhaps the strangest of today’s WiiWare announcements is Namco Bandai’s Bubble Wrap, a game in which players can simulate popping pockets of air trapped in plastic with the Wii Remote. There are 40 stages in different locations, while there is also some kind of two-player mode. It will arrive some time this spring and cost 800 Wii Points. Or you could get some donated to you from the empty boxes at your latest supermarket and spend hours of unquantifiable satisfaction without spending a penny.
In Japan, Okiraku Ping Pong will cost just 500 Wii Points on its release on March 25.
