Error 85010 in Smash Bros. Brawl online? Help arrives
Numerous reports from many disgruntled Super Smash Bros. Brawl across the Internet reveal that many are having trouble with the game’s online mode, specifically when attempting to battle online against random opponents during peak hours (evenings and weekends). If you’ve been affected, head inside to find out how Nintendo is addressing the issue, with advice and tips included.
The now infamous Error Code: 85010 message has been greeting a lot of Smash Bros. Brawl owners as of late. Nintendo’s official customer service page suggests that it could be down to a number of reasons including high traffic, incompatible router settings or the player’s Internet service provider. The following is lifted direct from Nintendo’s help site:
Our experience shows that error messages within this range are typically caused by temporary network issues with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. If there is a problem with the network, our technician’s will work to get the service back up as soon as possible. Please retry your connection later.
If you are connecting to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for the first time, or the problem has not resolved itself after a few hours, please review the following:
- 1. Our servers may be trying to handle an unusually high amount of traffic (especially if you are trying to play online with a recently-released or popular game, or if there is a new Wii system update). Please wait a few hours and try the connection again later.
- 2. How are you connecting online? The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is only compatible with Cable, DSL, and Fiber-optic internet connections. If you are connecting via Satellite, EV-DO (cellular), Dial-up, or other types of connections, then you should try to use an alternate type of connection. Contact your Internet Service Provider if you are not sure what type of internet connection you have.
- 3. The error may be caused by a basic setting on the router that needs to be adjusted (such as the channel). Please review our general router troubleshooting.
Sticking to playing against those with whom you have swapped Friends Codes should be fine, mind you, as should be the Spectator Mode.

Good thought it was just me, I use cable and its really fast but not luck getting on.
I also connect via cable internet. I bought the external Ethernet adapter. I a couple times and the farthest I got was to it finding 2 people than I got dropped from the match. Than I get the error message. I’ll just have to try again sometime.
So tell me, what do you intend to do about it?
hey wait a minute! i was online with a friend and had no problem until some of the later matches. this connecting to other random players is another problem. for some reason i cannot connect to strangers and play against them! the only possible reason is reason number 1 and even if it is does that mean nintendo cannot keep up with online demand? that i should wait until its convenient for the system? fine ok, but WHEN WILL THAT BE? if there is a solution i all for working toward it, but im not getting my slack for my $53.50 + cost of internet investment. (yeah that’s right i bought cable internet just for this game)
I agree with you. There is nothing wrong with anyones internet. Problems like this need not last more than a week. If it does people who own this game will do more than complain. They will want their money back… This as well is a lesson for them to learn. If you have a system out there that has sold as much as Wii you would think the online services would work a lot better. On the upside of this other game makers will take notice that there is a market on Wii for online gaming. For instance II purchased MLB2k8 and was very disappointed that there is no online capability. For that reason alone I am selling back my copy on Amazon.com. No one likes baseball when you play alone. This game simply stinks when you play alone.
sorry u bought the internet for this game and its not working now.. it BETTER be soon
Good!! I thought it was just me and my internet connection or its settings @ first. The first few times I played online that Sunday against random it didn’t take more than 15 secs to find 3 other people. Now if I get lucky it takes @ least 1 minute to find just 1!!! 2 if i’m lucky. And now it takes a lot longer for me to connect to the Wifi than the fist few times.
“Sticking to playing against those with whom you have swapped Friends Codes should be fine.”
Yea, unless you’re internet’s not really fast, like my college’s. Then you’re boned.
Why the hell do all of my OTHER DS/Wii online games run smoothly, and this one doesn’t?
Funny. My connection works best at peak hours for my time zone, but isn’t it always peak hours somewhere? Maybe that’s Nintendo’s way of saying, “um, we’re bad at this because Wii took forever to do anything online which Wii do at a very slow pace. Wii made another Wii pun so that means you’ll forgive us, right?”
So how the hell will nintendo fix this non next gen shit they need to stop fucking around and get some next gen grown man technology like cd/hd-dvd. And i say this as a dude with way too many kids in his family ”fuck them all” us adults or teens with jobs and money are the ones who have been supporting u nintendo all of 30 years not diseased piss ants under 14 and if i want some gruesome mature pickpocket rapist type ax murder gaming shit does that mean i have to buy a xbox 360 or PS3 just to have a non bullshit gaming server like PSN or XBL!!!!!!!!!! fix the issues thats all i’m asking
