Best Buy stockpiling Wii consoles until 12/17?
Some guy named Scott sent Go Nintendo a scan of what is apparently the Best Buy employee newsletter, The Retail Insider. The inanimate piece of paper demands that its readers hold all Wii consoles until December 17th.
This newsletter says that since the 17th is the final shopping Sunday before Christmas, the chain wants to have lots of them ready for consumers (me, I mean us). “Lots of them” in this case means “at least 40″, which sounds very nice. However, Nintendo Wii Fanboy wishes to rain on my, I mean our, parade:
You can read the reasons why above, however we’re still chalking this up to be a rumor at this point due to the typo in the last bullet point.
Thankfully, their are typos in these “professional” things all the time, so it still may be true. I’m at least going to call. Who else doesn’t have and wants a Wii and hopes the 17th is their lucky day?
EDIT: In the below comments, different Nintendic readers say that EB Games and Gamestop will be doing the same, and it follows that other stores will as well. There’s no proof that this is truth but it would be a good idea to call several different stores on Sunday and try to find a Wii.
I work at a Best Buy and that’s what we’re hearing right now. Oh, and was that “their are typos” intentional?

I’m kinda suprised that I didn’t get people assuming I was pulling a “Yeah, my dad’s cousin’s nephew’s cousin’s best friend works at [insert company relevant to discussion here].” I appreciate it. Unfortunately, Best Buy employees aren’t allowed to purchase PS3s or Wiis so I’m just going to have to get one of my parents to pick it up then.
Well I mentioned in the post edit that there’s no way to know if you’re lying, but I don’t have any reason not to believe you, and a few phone calls never hurt anybody (unless the phone explodes and rips off half of your face, then it hurts.)
I know some friends that work at ebgames/gamestop and they are apparently doing the same thing per the request of the central office.
Yeah, I work at EB Games and they got the same thing. We can’t sell any of the Wii’s til the 17th. We’ve got about 20-30 of them but can’t do a thing till then.

I work at the EB games in Deptford New Jersey. There won’t be a line because people don’t know. We aren’t allowed to tell customers because it’s coming out as some kind of first come first serve kind of thing.
If anyone asks we just tell them “We should get them next week.” A few of my friends wanted them so I told them to come in Sunday because I put it aside for them.
On the 17th we can sell them. Anyone that asks though is told we don’t have them, when we do.

Well it’s not really a lie, we just aren’t allowed to let them know. I guess they don’t want tons of people lining up for it.
Well, hearing all these comments, I’m calling every game store I know of on Sunday

10 AM this Sunday I’m going to Best Buy to try to get one. I hope they have a bunch in stock, because there will be a million people in line =O
Doubt it, most employees are encouraged to NOT be specific about the time they get them. The only people that know for sure are friends of the employees or people who found this article it seems.
Zone 117, i wouldnt get at best buy at 10, maybe 4:00, i am getting there at 3:00, though. I have been calling target and toysrus, and i know they are doing the same as Best Buy
hmmm.. well sunday around black friday I heard a rumor that best buy was storing up and when I went at 7 i was 31 in line, then at 10 there was about 70 people. Lucky for most of them, best buy had 52 consoles. =D
Target is holding them for the 17th too.
I went to Target and inquired about some Wii’s and I was told that they got trucks from Nintendo in nightly and if you got one it was based on luck. They didn’t say anything about stockpiling them.
I know this is kind of late but I went to Bestbuy at 7 p.m. and got three. THey did say they were stockpiling them…They had about 30 or so. I was first in line of 70 or so…

you guys keep referencing the 17th, do you mean the 16th(sunday), or is it actually monday(17th)?
FYI I was reading this and noticed the comments were back in 2006 except for the last three post. Remember to look at the date things are posted. I have seen online that several places will have the wii’s in Sunday the 16th - BB, CC Kmart and Target I believe are the ones. Hope this helps.
