Brawl creator hopes to work on “different genres” in future
The current issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu includes an extensive interview with Super Smash Bros. Brawl director Masahiro Sakurai, in which he discusses his pleasure at the eclectic fighter’s success, as well as his hopes for the direction of his own firm, Sora Ltd.
Speaking of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which has sold in excess of 1.5 million copies in Japan since launching in January, Sakurai expressed his delight at the different types of gamers that the beat-em-up was being experienced by:
“I am very glad that the game has been enjoyed by many people. Some play seriously and others play it for fun. Then there are also those who play the home run derby mode. Different people playing it for many different reasons makes me feel good about the game.”
Concering the development direction of his own company, Sora, in future, Sakurai says that he “hope[s] to be able to work on games of different genres, whether that is to meet our client’s needs or to match current gaming trends. I hope that Sora will not just be identified by a single genre like action games. Maybe through some luck, we may work on RPGs, or maybe it could be a fitness game like Wii Fit. I don’t want to be particular on what genre to work on, and just hope to create games that are naturally fun and enjoyable.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Sakurai said that he was disappointed that overall lack of Japanese developer representation at the recent Game Developer’s Choice Award ceremony, much which he put down to limited budgets on projects compared to Western software development.
