Dexter Morgan slays his way into the gaming world
Players will soon be able to enter into the dark, twisted and conflicted world of “The Dark Defender”, Dexter Morgan, as Marc Ecko Entertainment attempts to re-tell the story of the immensely popular TV show in the form of a video game for unannounced platforms.
Marc Ecko has revealed that it has entered into a production agreement with Showtime Networks to design a videogame based on the Emmy and Golden Globe winning hit television series “DEXTER”, which is currently doing the rounds on UK television channel ITV1, following a successful two series stint on US subscriber channel ‘Showtime’ and in its cut format on mainstream US TV channel CBS. Marc Ecko Entertainment will develop the property for interactive media in close collaboration with Showtime Networks to guarantee its faithfulness to the spirit of the groundbreaking show.
For those unaware, DEXTER, which is actually based on two popular novels, follows the life of Dexter Morgan, a forensic blood spatter expert for the Miami Dade Police Department. The twist comes in the form of his perfectly respectable persona hiding a dark compulsion and dastardly desire: he is a serial killer who hunts down people who have escaped justice, giving him the nickname of ‘The Dark Defender’. Many an episode has given the impression a very clever videogame version could well be created, but it remains to be seen whether or not this team involved can come up with the goods.
“DEXTER is the extremely rare TV show with enough layers of action and tension to translate perfectly into a compelling videogame. Our game designers, writers, and artists are going to give Dexter’s morally complex world the kind of interactivity that gamers will love.”
- Marc Fernandez, Vice President of Marc Ecko Entertainment.“DEXTER is one of the most popular shows on SHOWTIME with a particularly strong fan base among gamers. It’s a very logical jump to create a game with the website IGN.com naming it 2007’s ‘Best Television Program’. We’re confident Marc Ecko Entertainment’s team has the unique talents to take Dexter to the interactive space in the right way.”
- Len Fogge, Executive Vice President, Marketing, Digital Media and Research at Showtime Networks.
Marc Ecko Entertainment handled the production side of 2005’s game “Getting Up” and is currently working on an untitled project with developer Human Head. As for the Dexter game, though, it is already in the pre-production stage and Showtime Networks and Marc Ecko Entertainment are in talks with a handful of developers to bring the game to life. More details will definitely be announced in upcoming months, such as who will be behind the main project and what platforms it will be gracing.
