Tetris 3D confirmed for the Nintendo Wii

Alexey Pajitnov’s classic block puzzler, Tetris, has appeared on near enough every single gaming format ever invented, and with its charm and addictiveness already known to be infiltrating onto WiiWare, details appear today of what appears to be a full-priced, disc-based, three-dimensional version of the popular series.

Famitsu reports that Tetris 3D, being developed and published by Nintendo, challenges players to create snugly fitting ‘lines’ in three dimensions, using the Wii Remote and Nunchuck to manipulate the tetromino pieces successfully. With a lack of any real details, it’s difficult to tell just how the game will play out, although from the ‘next block’ window, could it be that players have to pluck each piece out of the air as falls, before slotting it into place with some quick thinking?

Of course, this isn’t the first time Tetris has been re-invented as a 3D videogame. Most notably, H2O Entertainment had a good ol’ crack at it with Tetrisphere on the Nintendo 64 - pretty enjoyable it was too.

We’ll find out just how Tetris 3D on the Nintendo Wii fares later on this year, with it currently penned in for a Winter release.

april fools? if so, not very funny.

It’s hard to tell if anything published on the internet yesterday was real or not. Tetris 3d sounds like a great idea either way, bring it on!

This was indeed an April Fools ‘joke’…
