Nintendo Media Summit: Boom Blox details

One of the Nintendo Wii’s other high profile titles for 2008 so far was discussed at the firm’s Media Summit yesterday - Electronic Arts’ and Steven Speilberg’s Boom Blox. The inventive puzzler is released in less than a month, and looks to be one of the most original third party efforts on the console to date. What’s more, it’s positively bursting with gameplay options.

Boom Blox will contain a massive 400 levels for players to conquer using its complex physics-based gameplay (in which the object is to knock every standing block flat). These are spread across three main modes: Single Player, Multiplayer (competitive or co-operative) and Create. Single and Multiplayer modes share 200 levels between them (while Create allows you to edit every single one), including an Adventure mode, which houses themed worlds and characters. Players are judged on how many ‘throws’ it takes to complete each task, with medals awarded, which are then used to unlock later levels.

Boom Blox’s universe includes a variety of different blocks, each which react differently when affected by force. Green blocks, for example, are filled with volatile chemicals and explode on impact, while purple blocks, like balloons, can be popped. GoNintendo reports that advanced tools can be unlocked to make your Blox Booming life easier, including a weighty bowling ball and a Super Bomb.

Spielberg explained to Electronic Arts that he wanted to create a videogame experience that he could share with his children, which might explain the storyline elements that have been added to what could, we imagine, been built as a no-frills puzzle game otherwise. Each Adventure Mode world is introduced by a new story, with 30 dynamic, individual characters appearing across environments from a Medieval setting to Tiki Island.

As for interactivity, EA explained that certain games could be saved to the Wii Remote and traded with other players, while any custom level built in the Create mode could be shared over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

As it was last month, Boom Blox’s release date was confirmed as being May 06 and May 09 in North America and Europe respectively.
