Square Enix’s Soul Eater - first screens, details
Earlier on this week, Famitsu Magazine revealed that Square Enix is currently developing an exclusive RPG for the Nintendo. However, rather than use one of its own franchises, Soul Eater is based on the popular Japanese manga and anime, the latter of which is currently screening in the land of the rising sun. This weekend throws up our first look at the game, in which a few details are hidden. Sadly, it’s not looking fantastic so far…
According to Japanese gaming website Game Watch, the title is being developed along the anime series of the same name, which premiered in the country last week. Originally a manga comic written by Atsushi Okubu, it is set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon masters, and revolves around the lives of three groups of students, each trying to turn a “human weapon” into a “Death Scythe” by collecting souls of ninety-nine evil humans and one witch.
Although the title is early in development, there’s no ducking away from the fact that the first set of screenshots are really rather shoddy. Ropey textures and bland environments aren’t exactly a compliment to the effort that has said to have gone into the fairly high budget anime series, but we’re hopeful that things will improve on that front in the months to come. Gameplay-wise, there looks to be no shortage of powerful, acrobatic attacks, the ferocity of which, we’re guessing, is dictated by the three fiery globes sitting above each character’s health bar.
Whether Square Enix’s newest Nintendo Wii RPG will ever make it outside of Japan is yet to be seen, but we’ll keep you posted on any progress on that front.

Is it just me or does it look kind of like Kingdom Hearts?
Exactly what I was thinking…I wonder if it’s a pre-cursor to a KH1+2 bundle for Wii in the future?
the video game looks awesome
