Nintendo: majority of players don’t want Wii hard drive
The discussion topic over the Nintendo Wii and its limited storage space just isn’t going to go away, not unless Nintendo gives in and releases a hard disk drive for the console, to pacify those begging for it. However, if the words of Nintendo of Europe’s senior marketing director are anything to go by, the firm is still unwilling to budge on the issue.
Speaking to Official Nintendo Magazine at a WiiWare event at the company’s German headquarters, Laurent Fischer explained:
“At the moment, we of course know that some people are strug… well, it’s not that they’re struggling, it’s just that they don’t like the system as it’s set up at the moment. But at the end of the day, the system is manageable.”
He continued:
“I realise that some people would like to store everything in one place, for easy accessibility, which is understandable. For them, it would be more convenient to have more space. But having said that, I don’t think that’s the general feeling of most of the people.
“Most of the people are happy with what they have. Of course, we could increase our technology and add a hard drive, but then what we lose is simplicity and accessibility, which is one of the important things for us. We want our consoles to be easy to access and not cause headaches.”
How hard would it be to offer a hard drive to those who want one, Nintendo? Sigh.

Geez! It’s such ignorant statements like this from Nintendo (founded in arrogance and paranoia) that make me think that they are just one step away from disaster still.
Release a f***ing better storage solution already! The mentality here is beyond asinine!
Actually, I do not need a harddrive, but at least allow us to load the games directly from the SD card or make the Wii support USB drives. I guess they can do this with a firmware update unless their internal bus bandwidth is very limited, which I doubt
I think they should just add support for external hard drives and USB drives. If nintendo comes out with its own though, I fear it could be either excessively priced or something.
I guess they are also saying that of the many people who own Wii’s as well that most are like me and have plenty of space left and maybe either like 2 VC titles and 1-2 Wiiware titles.
Nintendo is falling into their old habits of telling us what we want rather then asking us. This doesn’t bode well for Nintendo fans.
well put.
Just because the Wii has an excess of casual players, doesn’t mean they want to limit their space. Something tells me running out of space on your Wii downloading a couple virtual console games and finding you have no room left will cause more headaches than trying to figure out how to attach a USB harddrive or the likes.
i dont get it ?
they say that they dont want ? ive never seen some one who is saying he doesnt want extra feature in his console ?
even if they never used it
To be honest, if it would lower the price of a console, I’d say go ahead and take off some of the extra stuff. But I do agree that the Wii has a pitifully small HD space.
nintendo with their stupid lies yet again.
nintendo must have the worst PR in the world.
Wrong! Sony has the worst PR in the world. Well, they HAD… now that Phil Harrison and Ken Kutaragi are gone, hopefully things will change.
Actually, the general consensus today is that Nintendo rarely if ever listens to its fans. There was an internal examination of their ability to relate to their fans, and Nintendo got one of the lowest scores.
IF you want inability to relate to people who buy products, take a look at Microsoft support. Muddling through their system is like slogging through mud for three hours. I know because I have had to deal with them for computer issues.
If having a hard drive would confuse someone, then they won’t buy it. There are plenty of people who do want a hard drive — enough people to make it profitable to go through the steps of making a hard drive available. It’s not like you need an R&D team to reinvent the hard drive.
If people don’t want an SD card to increase their memory for the system then they don’t have to buy it. Same goes for a USB drive. If it’s to ‘hard’ for them to use and understand then they don’t have to buy it. This hurts most hardcore gamers who want more space on the Wii. It sounds like an excuse…
this really pisses me off. i’m all for nintendo but i can’t deny the bullshit decisions they make. they take away the dvd playback feature, they give us shit storage, and say a harddrive is more confusing than an SD card. how the fuck? i completely agree that they suck at listening to fan requests. that’s partly how and why other systems, and their repsective games, have cooler features. because those fans ask for it, and they get it, get your act together Nintendo, we’re sick of it
but then what we lose is simplicity and accessibility, which is one of the important things for us. We want our consoles to be easy to access and not cause headaches
…
with so few people wanting hard-drive option very few people would loose simplicity and nintendo would make just a little more money
anyway… for me personally what i want is the wii to be able to read directly from the SD card for channel data
the only downside there is i think the SD card is lot slower than the wii internal flash memory… so maybe they haven’t allowed it for that reason.
I got tired of waiting for a hard-drive from Nintendo… So that’s why I COPY EVERY VC game plus Wii-Ware games so that settled needing a hard-drive I have them all copied onto my SD card.
THANKS NINTENDO!!
I actually ended up copying all of mine to my PC. Its quite weird really cause I can even due the USB thingy through my PSP to save the titles, lol.
