Ubisoft goes casual gaming crazy for Wii and DS
The good news from Ubisoft’s Ubidays event yesterday was that the French developer pledged rather a lot of support to both the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS for the foreseeable future. The bad news is that there really isn’t much for the core gamer to get excited about, as the slew of Imagine series games, as well as Babies Party and Dogz 2008 demonstrate. All of the worrying details below.
Imagine Teacher
First up is Imagine Teacher, aimed at girls between 6-14 years old and promising to give them an insight into the real world of a newbie teacher who has been employed at a new school. You’ll teach them all sorts of new skills; develop their personalities, and as one of the screenshots divulges, be asked to “touch the inattentive pupil.” Um. It’ll be out this autumn.
Imagine Rock Star
Next is Imagine Rock Star, allowing young girls to form a the band of their dreams and become a virtual music legend as they climb the charts and waste horrific amounts of money on garish outfits. Many different instruments will be on offer, and the more popular you come, the more money you (and three other players should you fancy it) will earn. It’ll be released this July.
My Fashion Studio
My Fashion Studio, Ubisoft explains, is the first in a full line of games that it is developing within the fashion category, building on the success of titles such as Imagine Fashion Designer. Players take on the role of a young woman who wants to conquer the world of fashion, from starting out on the grimy, bottom rung of the ladder and working her way up to become a worldwide trendsetter. It’ll be winging its way into stores on June 03.
My Secret World by Imagine
My Secret World is less a game and more of an interactive diary for the Nintendo DS. Ubisoft explains that the title is all about self expression, allowing players to customise their journal with artwork, as well as throwing up suggestions about what they might want to do with themselves, depending on their current mood. Both thoughts and items can be shared via other users, either locally or online via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
The Nintendo Wii doesn’t escape the casual gaming onslaught either, with both Babies Party and Petz Dogs being announced.
Babies Party (Balance Board usage included)
Babies Party (set in the ‘famous’ babysitting academy’ includes 30 mini-games, that can either be played head-to-head or co-operatively, and are based on the typical day of a baby and its carer. There are no specific details on which activities will utilise the Balance Board, although memory games, puzzles, colouring and cutting are all included, so take your best guess.
Dogz 2008
In Dogz 2008, players can adopt a dog from 18 different breeds, train their dog to compete in races, dress him or her in more than 100 outfits, and engage their dog in different activities including jump roping and playing catch at the park. A new feature will also allow dogs to travel to other Wii consoles and interact with other dogs.
“Gaming is opening to the whole span of population, and Imagine is a very concrete sign of that trend” said Alain Corre, Executive Director, EMEA Territories at Ubisoft. “Ubisoft’s Imagine games are specifically developed to meet the needs and aspirations of young girls. They can access hundreds of customization possibilities and share their gaming experience with their friends. The Imagine games have been very successful last year, and we are confident that our new titles will follow the same path.”

Since when is a massive load of shovelware deemed “support”?
It’s troubling that as a Nintendo site you aren’t bashing Ubisoft to hell for this steaming pile of sh*t.
