EU/AU: VC Friday (June 13, 2008)

There’s a whopping five new additions to the Virtual Console in Europe and Australia this week, with a couple of classics thrown in there amongst them. With Nintendo being so generous on this front, it appears there’s no update to the WiiWare service.

Nebulus (Commodore 64, 1 Player, 500 Wii Points):

Nebulus was considered revolutionary in its time for its graphic technique. As the main character walked around the outside of the tower, the character was fixed in the middle of the screen while the tower itself rotated. This gave it a pseudo-3D effect.

“You play a small green creature who needs to blow up eight towers, because their presence is somehow poisoning the water of planets which could potentially be ideal colonies. Unfortunately you need to get to the top of these towers to blow them up.

You make your way up to the top of the tower via walkways around the outside of the towers. You need to jump over, kick, and run from various enemies in your journey to the top. Most vertical movement is achieved by jumping onto moving ledges at the right moment.”

The Last Ninja 2: Back with a Vengeance (Commodore 64, 500 Wii Points):

The Last Ninja is a series of computer and video games published by System 3. The first game in the series, titled The Last Ninja, was released in 1987 for the Commodore 64. The Last Ninja was one of the most successful games ever for the C64, with over 2 million copies sold worldwide for all formats. In 1988, System 3 released Last Ninja 2: Back with a Vengeance.

With the scrolls now in his possession, The Last Ninja begins training a new order of Ninja. During a training session he is mysteriously transported to New York. The Evil Shogun has returned!

Torn from his own time, The Last Ninja must defend himself once more with nothing more than the belief in his own abilities.

Ninja Combat (NEO GEO, 1-2 Players, 900 Wii Points):

Set in modern day 1990, Ninja Combat is a side-scrolling beat-em-up, which reports suggest fail to live up to the quality of rivals such as Streets of Rage or Final Fight. The fact that it it’s hardly a masterpiece in graphical terms (despite the NEO GEO’s reputation back in the day), we’d approach with caution.

Fatal Fury 2 (Neo Geo, 1-2 Players, 900 Wii Points):

Fatal Fury 2 was the second game in SNK’s 100-Mega Shock series, offering improved graphics and gameplay over the original Fatal Fury. The play controls were modified, this time making full use of the Neo-Geo’s four button configuration, by including four attack buttons (two Punch buttons and two Kick buttons). The game expands on the two-lane plane system by giving the player the ability to knock their opponent to the other lane. Additionally some stages have hazards like electrified wires or a stampede of bulls.

Again, the Lone Wolves return!

Geese Howard may have been defeated, but that doesn’t mean all is peaceful. A new opponent, Wolfgang Krauser, has come forth to begin a new Fatal Fury tournament. The Lone Wolves return, with new faces amongst them. Only one can be declared the winner though.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World (SEGA Master System, 1 Player, 500 Wii Points):

Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a platform game for the 8-bit Sega Master System video game console. It was first released in Japan on November 1, 1986. Due to the mass distribution of the version bundled with and built into some versions of the Sega Master System console, it became the most recognised game in the Alex Kidd series.

Many centuries ago, on the planet Aries, there lived a boy called Alex Kidd. For seven years, he lived on Mt. Eternal studying Shellcore, an ancient art that makes one strong enough to break rocks into pieces. As he was leaving the mountain one day to travel to his spiritual homeland, a dying man told him that the peaceful city of Radactian was in grave danger. Before taking his last breath, the man gave Alex a piece of a map and a medallion made of Sun Stone.

There are eleven locations in which Alex must explore, each of them has its own unique dangers. In each location, Alex can collect bags of coins, which can be used to buy items at the shop and are used to help Alex get through each location (eg: motorcycle, peticopter, power bracelet, etc.) There are also traps that Alex must avoid like the ghost that chases him. He can also collect the Telepathy Ball that will help him read people’s minds.

Until next week… spend those Wii Points wisely!
