Nintendo: Wii-DVD plans on hold, DS TV green-lighted
Whilst Nintendo may have been planning to allow Wii owners to play DVD’s on their consoles from the very first day, plans were thought to have been temporarily put on hold whilst Nintendo ironed out one or two undisclosed issues. Now, however, it would appear that the potential DVD-compatible version of Wii could be even further away than everyone actually thought.
IGN’s Wii channel has translated a report from Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun that states the plans for a DVD-ready version of the Wii console is currently on hold for the time being. Back on 27th June, the Kyoto Company’s president, Satoru Iwata, spoke on the matter at a stock holder meeting, saying the following of the device that gamers have been wanting for a long time now: “With supply constraints [of the Wii] continuing worldwide, the priority is on the current model.” Therefore, after missing the proposed late 2007 release, it looks like maybe gamers will have to wait until sometime in 2009 when Wii demand around the world begins to level somewhat and Nintendo can gain control over stock supplies in general.
In the same meeting, however, there was some positive news for Nintendo DS owners in Japan, as Nikkei is reporting the company has confirmed it will be giving the 1-seg TV Tuner (that allows Japanese DS users to view digital television broadcasts) for the Nintendo DS a full-scale retail release next month, in July, following a overwhelming response to online sales.

No big deal about holding off on a dvd player. Most people have a standalone dvd player or can use their Xbox 360 or PS3. Nintendo is doing the right thing by trying to get more Wii consoles to market.
