First modchip for Wii announced?

Is it a real? Is it a hoax? Who knows, but today’s reality is that a group called Microninja has announced imminent availability of the Wiinja modchip. While the Xbox 360 has so far remained fairly resilient to the constant pounding of hackers on its security system, this would mean the Wii’s core security has already fallen within 2 months of its release.

WiinjaFound on the PS2-scene forums, we at ICGamers are always the first to apply reasonable doubt when it comes to modchips and the like, but the information presented by Wiinja does look reasonably trustworthy. The modchip, tentatively priced 35 euro, is to be soldered on the Wii mainboard at only 5 solder spots, and then supposedly enables you to boot backups of both Wii and Gamecube games, including imported Gamecube titles. No region unlocking is done, so you’ll still have to buy your original games in the correct region since the homemade copies will not function elsewhere.

Attempts at video proof of authenticity are provided here and here, although we all know how easy anyone could fake that. We’ll just have to wait for reliable witness reports before we call this anything more than a rumor.
