Atari has today lifted the lid off of Backyard Football ‘09, which it is planning to release for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS in October 2009. Aimed at the younger player, it is the seventh entry in the series and the second time the franchise has tackled its way on the Wii and DS.

Backyard Football ‘09 offers 7 on 7 games, with current NFL superstars transformed into their childlike selves. The cartoon-like sim also features new Pro Bowl and tournament modes, season play or single games, custom teams and players, un-lockables, and multiple levels. And Backyard also would be Backyard if it didn’t come chock full of power-ups that can be unleashed during the game. Game Features

• NFL Experience: Backyard Football 2009 includes all 32 NFL teams uniforms and logos; roster full of NFL athletes as kids, with at least one pro from every team including Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Tony Romo, LaDainian Tomlinson, Brian Urlacher, Reggie Bush, and Frank Gore. Realistic NFL plays and strategies.
• New Game Modes: Includes new tournament and all-pro game modes. Single game play or season mode. Single and multiplayer capabilities and NDS wireless multiplayer. Season play with complete stats and standings.
• Muti-Faceted features: Includes multiple levels of difficulty and multiple camera views. Un-lockables, camera-ups and multi games are also included.

The Nintendo DS build doesn’t look too bad, but those Wii sreenshots are horrifying. It’s like Cruis’n and Lost in Blue 3 all over again. And after seeing the feat that Capcom has pulled off with Dead Rising Wii (reported earlier on today), it’s just a little bit depressing.
