Resident Evil 5 to Wii?

Now this is interesting. Some loose-tongues at E3 2008 have seemingly let slip the news that Capcom’s RE5 will also be coming to the Nintendo Wii. Thing is, did they actually mean what they said? We try to cut through the confusion for you inside.

In an interview with Kotaku, SEGA (yes, SEGA) president Simon Jeffery came right out and said that Resident Evil 5 would be coming to Wii. But did he mean it?

Shocking stuff, and Kotaku chased it up. Asking Nintendo’s Corporate Affairs VP Denise Kaigler if we would be seeing RE5 on Wii she replied, “Not yet!”. Speaking to Capcom’s Chris Kramer outside the publisher’s E3 meeting room they again raised the same question:

[…]He seemed genuinely surprised to hear of such a product. We told him that we already knew about the existence of Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop and he suggested that Mr. Jeffery was simply confusing the two products.

As far as a Wii port of the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 title, Kramer asked of us “Have you seen Resident Evil 5?” implying that such a port would be almost impossible, adding that he’d not heard any such product was in the works for Nintendo’s platform.

Finally, they went back to Mr. Jeffery, the man who started it all. The SEGA president stated that the mention of Resident Evil 5 for Wii was just a “simple slip of the tongue.”

So, it was all a massive (and rather confusing) mix-up. Don’t rule-out Capcom bringing RE5 to the Wii just yet though, anything could happen. We live in hope…

The graphics would have to be lowered dramatically to port Resident Evil 5 to the Wii. Enough that it wouldn’t be the same game anymore. Although Resident Evil 5 with MotionPlus would be interesting. As I stated in another post give Wii owners an original M or T rated game, with realistic graphics and maybe using MotionPlus. Enough with the ports and remakes.

I could see a port working just fine. If Dead Rising for the Wii holds up well, there’s no reason Resident Evil 5 can’t. About the remakes, DM, those are very attractive to loyal fans. Look at Final Fantasy IV and Dragon Quest on DS. I think the problem with ports is the lack of balance between having so many of them and not enough original content.

I have a hard time considering something like Resident Evil 5 a “remake or a port” because it is a new game. Sure, they can’t match the graphics of PS3 or XBOX 360, but they are thinking of us Wii owners who aren’t “casual gamers.” We aren’t being left in the lurch by Capcom. Someone notices, and that’s awesome (Being that I am a huge RE fan & dying to see Dead Rising).

I plan on playing Resident Evil 5 on the Xbox 360. About the “remake or port” you’re right since RE5 has not been relaesed yet. I’ve never programmed or designed a video game before. I’m not a graphics “addict” but I don’t see how RE5’s graphics could be directly produced on Wii. If RE5 were released simultaneously with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions I wouldn’t have a problem. That’s just my own personality quirk. About Dead Rising, it will be interesting to see how the Wii handles that many zombies on screen at the same time. If Capcom can pull it off that would be great. Dead Rising was released August 2006, RE5 will be released March 2009 and it is already looking spectacular. I just don’t see the Wii pulling it off in its current form.

Maybe RE5 would just look really jagged? Whatever, I seriously doubt it’s coming to the Wii. I’ll be getting the 360 version regardless.
