No new Wii colours coming yet, says Nintendo

Nintendo of Japan may have recently revealed that it would be releasing special coloured Wii Remote straps, but it would seem there are no plans for coloured Wii consoles just yet.

Following the recent E3 conference, IGN’s Wii channel had the chance to catch up with Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Cammie Dunaway, in order to talk about various different issues. The first point of call had to be why Nintendo focused on the casual audience, to which Dunaway suggested that Nintendo was trying to show the breadth of its games as that is what Nintendo is all about, appealing to everyone - people of all ages and sex.

IGN then went on to praise the Wii MotionPlus add-on for the Wii Remote that offers up true 1:1 motion sensing, but wondered if it would eventually become a standard, with the device either being incorporated into new Wii Remotes or the accessory being sold along with the standarad controller. All Dunaway could say was the standard line of how the MotionPlus accessory will be bundled free with Wii Sports Resort, as well as being sold separately. In other words, nothing we did not already know.

As for the WiiSpeak device that can be used with Animal Crossing: City Folk, she went on to say:

IGN’s Wii channel: Why sell WiiSpeak separately from Animal Crossing?

Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing: Because the Animal Crossing game can be a blast in and of itself. The chance to really customise your experience. The chance to go and look at your friends’ towns and share that experience with them. You don’t have to have WiiSpeak in order for it to be a great experience, but when you add WiiSpeak on top of it, I think it enhances it, and that’ll be a level of gameplay that’ll be appealing to some audiences.

IGN’s Wii channel: And do you foresee third-parties using it?

Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing: I would certainly anticipate that it’s one more tool in a developer’s toolkit.

There are no Wii colours coming any time soon according to Nintendo of AmericaContinuing on the ‘talking lots, but not giving anything away’, all-smiles Cammie shot down any chance of seeing coloured Wii consoles any time in the near future:

IGN’s Wii channel: Any chance we’ll see different colored Wii consoles in the near future?

Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing: Certainly don’t have any announcements to make about different colours. We continue to sell out of Wii pretty much as fast as we put it on the shelf. We’ve increased capacity 30 percent so it’s nice to be able to get more units to more people. We’re shipping 2.4 million monthly worldwide and it varies a bit from country to country, but when you’ve got something that’s still selling out about as fast as we can put it into the market, we’re not thinking about further colors at this point.

Finally, the idea of a Nintendo DS re-design was also shot down, with Dunaway simply saying that the company is more focused on getting the current system into the hands of those eager to play on DS for the first time.
