New details of Nintendo’s Captain Rainbow on Wii emerge

Nintendo’s unusual new Wii project, Captain Rainbow, from the developer behind GiFTPiA and Chibi-robo, Skip Ltd., is set to hit Japan on 28th August and at last some new concrete details have emerged from a Japanese retailer and have now been translated.

Completely out of the blue Nintendo revealed that it had a game called Captain Rainbow heading to Wii and that it would be out much sooner than anyone could have guessed, despite a trademark for the game’s name appearing earlier in the year. Now information is starting to pour out of Japan at a spectacular rate as Nintendo attempts to quickly build up sufficient hype to help the game sell. Below are two new trailers from the game, showing off characters like Little Mac and Birdo, as well as the translated details from the NeoWing retailer website:

Captain★Rainbow - The Intense Punch of Love

The Adventure Part: Communicate with the island’s inhabitants! The inhabitants are Nintendo characters that did not make it to stardom. Mimin Island’s inhabitants are minor Nintendo characters that never quite made it to “star” status. They live on this island trying to make their wishes come true. Hikari (from Shin Onigashima), Birdo (from Super Mario USA), Mappo (from GiFTPiA), Takamaru (from Nazo no Murasamejou), Little Mac (from Punch-Out!!) and other Nintendo characters await you!

Communicate with the inhabitants! Enjoy the island life. You can cater to their requests, or fish, or do what whatever you want. It is entirely up to you. Do not be surprised, though, if you get some pretty demanding requests all of a sudden. You can go fishing or bug collecting or even help with somebody’s golf swing. Help people out and you may get Earth Crystals called Kirarin (Sparklies).

Captain Rainbow is a game that mixes action and adventure; it’s an action adventure game.

The Action Part: Fight for the wish-granting “Stars”! Collect lots of Kirarin (”Sparklies”) and a Star will fall from the sky. Thrilling action awaits as you carry the Star to the island’s altar while chasing a mysterious silhouette to claim the Star for yourself. Attack the Silhouette, or dodge its attacks to stop it from stealing the Star. If the Silhouette gets you, be prepared for some relentless button pushing to win the minigame.

But will it be your own wish, or that of someone else? “The Altar where wishes come true” - If you get the Star to the Altar, any one wish will be granted. Make the ultimate choice!

  • Scenario A: Grant an inhabitant’s wish. The inhabitants that have their wishes granted will leave the island and it is back to adventuring for you.
  • Scenario B: Grant your own wish. You will get to be a popular super hero once again. But what about the rest of the Mimin dwellers?

So which will it be? You know what a true hero would do…

Captain★Rainbow - The Failure of the Light Diet

Is Captain Rainbow the sort of game that is now firmly on your radar, or should it stay over in Japan just like Skip Ltd’s GiFTPiA on the GameCube did? Be sure to let us know your thoughts on this crazy-looking, and extremely intriguing, game by posting below…

Woah. Seeing the newest trailers makes it hard to imagine this in the US. I’d deffinately play it, though.

I’m hoping that since it’s featuring long lost Nintendo characters Wart from SMB2 will make an appearance as well! :)
