Vanillaware’s Wii project safe, Arc Rise RPG coming to US

Up until now the chances of seeing games from Marvelous Entertainment coming over to the North American market have been somewhat shaky considering everything relied on deals being struck with external Third Party publishers. Europeans were lucky in the fact that Rising Star Games was set-up by Marvelous as a dedicated publisher for that territory, and now it is looking more likely that the US will have that same luck now as Marvelous USA has been established and a deal with XSEED formed.

But that is hardly new news at all. What IS new, however, is that plans are developing to release some of the big name Nintendo releases over in the US. Siliconera recently got the chance to sit down with the President of Marvelous Entertainment in Japan, Yasuhiro Wada and discuss what is going on with various releases.

Stylish DS adventure Lux Pain is being considered for a US release

Whilst it has been revealed that Little King’s Story on Wii and Matrix’s DS RPG Avalon Code are already coming to the US via XSEED, plus Luminous Arc 2: Will on Nintendo DS is being brought over by Atlus and various Harvest Moon games on DS and Wii are still being handled by Natsume, currently nothing has been confirmed about either the DS adventure game Lux Pain or Goichi Suda’s PlayStation 2 port, the intriguing Flower, Sun and Rain, also on DS, despite the fact that both games are indeed coming to Europe via Rising Star Games. From the sound of it, both games will release in the US, but it is more a matter or whether or not Marvelous USA handles the publishing duties or they are instead licensed out to another publisher.

Good news on the Wii front is that Arc Rise Fantasia is being considered for a North American release. “Since XSEED has experience releasing RPGs in the US we will consider them as the publisher for Arc Rise Fantasia.” This RPG from Image Epoch, the team behind Luminous Arc, is one that has Wii fans hot under the collar already, so it is very pleasing to hear the game will likely be Westernised.

On the Harvest Moon, Wada-san cleared up quite an interesting point, stating that XSEED and Marvelous USA will never be able to release Harvest Moon games in the US since Natsume actually holds the copyright to that Western brand name, meaning that should anything bad ever happen in the future between the two partners, Marvelous would have to bring the game over under a completely different title.

Vanillaware’s Wii project may have hit some roadblocks, but is still coming

For those wondering about where Vanillaware’s highly anticipated Wii project ‘Oboro Muramasa Youtoden’ is, especially after reports of a troubled development process, fans should worry not as the team behind Odin Sphere on the PlayStation 2 is still working through the game’s creation and has NOT cancelled it as believed. Wada-san simply said “Come to the Tokyo Game Show and you can see it. We don’t know if it will be playable, but we are talking about it. You should be able to see new videos at the event.”

Finally, in terms of digital downloads, the following was discussed:

Siliconera: For Marvelous USA or Marvelous in general have you thought about doing digital download games like Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, or WiiWare?

Yasuhiro Wada, President of Marvelous Entertainment: Actually we’re working on a downloadable title.

Siliconera: For which platform?

Yasuhiro Wada, President of Marvelous Entertainment: WiiWare.

Siliconera: Is it a Harvest Moon game?

Yasuhiro Wada, President of Marvelous Entertainment: No, a brand new title.

So, what are your thoughts on this? Arc Rise Fantasia in the West, Vanillaware’s Wii project still in the works, a new non-Harvest Moon game coming to WiiWare - there certainly is a lot to be watching out for from Marvelous over the next year. Be sure to share your opinions by posting below…
