Activision confirms Guitar Hero coming to Nintendo

Upon its original release in 2006, Red Octane’s Guitar Hero, the incredibly popular fake Gibson SG-strumming musical extravaganza, was a PlayStation 2 exclusive. The emergent pseudo rockers that subsequently flocked to Guitar Hero not only led to a full-on rocking sequel, but also saw the series widen its appeal by embracing the Xbox 360. It should therefore come as scant little surprise to learn that Nintendo’s Wii will also stage a leg of the continuing Guitar Hero tour.

There’s currently not much in the way of concrete information to report on the Wii edition of Guitar Hero, except to say that it certainly is on the way. Moreover, no one presently knows whether it will be an entirely new Wii imagining of the franchise that somehow integrates the console’s motion-sensing attributes while offering a brand new set of songs, or whether its musical content will be taken from the original game or a mixture (or even a gathering) of both Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II?

Suffice it to say, all we can relay to you is the following statement that came from an extremely drawn out Activision conference call for its investors, and proved to be one of the publishers few revealed morsels of interest:

“… we will aggressively target the Nintendo platforms consistent with our multi-platform strategy and Nintendo’s expected growth. In fiscal 2008, we will double our offerings on the DS and the Wii, including Spider-Man, Shrek, Transformers, and Guitar Hero.

Of course, that above statement does not clearly specify which of Nintendo’s platforms will be receiving Guitar Hero in (fiscal) 2008, and it neither does it outline if both the Wii and DS will be blessed with Guitar Hero goodness. However, logic dictates that to truly enjoy the essence of the Guitar Hero experience, a certain moulded replica Gibson SG (or some other applicable model) will be required by the player – which rather flies in the face of the DS’s decidedly ‘portable’ ethos.

Either way, it’s not in the least bit surprising to see Guitar Hero spreading its platform coverage, and it can only be seen as good news that gamers beyond the ranks of those with a PlayStation 2 and/or Xbox 360 will finally get the chance to mosh along maniacally to the likes of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Jimi Hendrix, while living their egoistic dreams of becoming a rock legend.

As per usual, as soon as we know more, you’ll know more. Thanks Danl for submitting.
