Nintendo does well at Shiny Awards 2007

Last night saw Nintendo do pretty darn well at the Shiny Awards 2007 in London, an annual awards ceremony widely looked upon as the BAFTAs of the gadget world (its UK placement means we really shouldn’t cheapen its significance by labelling it as something as gaudy as The Oscars), click “more” to see exactly how Nintendo faired in the awards stakes.
Attendees at the Shiny Awards 2007, hosted by Shiny Media, last night got to witness Korea-based tech company LG Electronics scoop the most prizes of the evening, successfully securing “WAG Gadget of the Year” (Wife And Girlfriend) and “Icon of the Year” for its tantalisingly named Chocolate mobile phone, while also bagging “Best Fashion Mobile” for its Shine handset.

However, from Nintendic’s point of view, Nintendo certainly applied a good showing to the awards proceedings by nabbing “European Gadget of the Year” for its newly arrived Nintendo Wii videogames console. The winning Wii impressively beat out competition including that of Apple’s iconic iPod, with the award being bestowed upon the Wii as voted for across various European blog networks including Italy’s imaginatively named GamesBlog, as well as Spain’s Xataka, Germany’s Daily Gadget, and France’s Journal du Geek.
The 5,000-blog responses placed the Wii literally miles ahead of its closest rivals (the iPod Nano music player, and Nokia N Series mobile phones) with more than 50% of the total vote.
The night didn’t stop there for Nintendo though, with the Japanese gaming giant also registered respectable runner-up prestige with its phenomenally popular Wii Sports title, which came in a close second to Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in the “Game of the Year” category.
Well done, Ninty!
