Further detail dregs on Scarface: The World Is Yours

We already know that the rumours of Scarface: The World Is Yours appearing on the Nintendo Wii have indeed proved to be true, with the 1.5 million-selling movie extension videogame expected to arrive on Nintendo’s latest piece of home hardware in the summer of this year. But what we want to know is, what exactly will Tony Montana be bringing with him to the Wii version – and will it include his “little friend”?

Based on the 1983 Universal Pictures gangster classic, Scarface: The World Is Yours delivers an action packed sequel storyline that dares to ask: “What if Tony Montana survived the mansion shootout” seen at the climax of the movie, and then returned to Miami in order to embark on a quest to rebuild his empire and exact vengeance on his enemies? While purist fans of the original Al Pacino-bolstered Scarface movie might have blustered fervently at the very notion of creating an entirely new IP around one of Hollywood’s most famous and iconic (deceased) characters, but it certainly hasn’t stopped Vivendi Games and Sierra Entertainment from notching up a confirmed gaming hit.

Somewhat worryingly, especially given Nintendo’s longstanding ‘family friendly’ corporate motif, the official Nintendo Wii-specific Scarface: The World Is Yours press release states, amongst other pointers, that the game will contain “alterations for the Wii audience.” However, we can’t presently confirm whether those “alterations” will be positive or negative.

However, possible content tampering aside for one moment, Wii owners can look forward to grappling with “graphics and gameplay optimisations” along with an “all-new control scheme” that’s implemented to take advantage of the Wii’s innovative and unique Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers.

“Bringing Scarface: The World Is Yours to [Nintendo] Wii is an exciting opportunity to take an already amazing game and add an incredible twist, thanks to the Wii console’s unique Remote controller abilities,”

enthused Cindy Cook, chief strategy and marketing officer for Vivendi Games.

“Adding motion-sensitive elements to a game that already includes an incredible celebrity cast, Hollywood production values and non-stop action, delivers a gaming experience unlike any other, truly bringing the world of Tony Montana to vivid life.”

Presently, and we really don’t want to sound overly pessimistic based on Nintendo’s prior ‘offend no one’ software track record, there’s no official mention of a certain blood-soaked chainsaw being cut from the final Wii version of Scarface: The World Is Yours, and we can subsequently only hope that nothing gets cut – apart from enemy body parts – when the game arrives in the summer.

On the flip side of paranoid pessimism, Rockstar Games’ recent controversial unveiling of Manhunt 2 for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and, yes, the Nintendo Wii might just mean that The World Is Yours is left well alone. Here’s hoping!
