Online features in next Fire Emblem title?

Nintendo and Intelligent System’s Fire Emblem has been existed since the days of the original Nintendo Entertainment System and in nine further titles has stamped its mark on the hardware of every generation since. It isn’t surprising, then, to discover that such a tradition is continuing on the Nintendo Wii, next time perhaps even with online features included.

IGN reports that in a chat with Dengeki DS and Wii Style (formerly known as Dengeki DS Style), Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami, as well as Intelligent System’s producer Toru Narihiro and their “graphics chief,” Masahiro Higuchi hinted that we could expect to see an online component in the next outing for Fire Emblem on the Nintendo Wii.

Yamagami revealed to the magazine that his team had originally considered implementing Nintendo Wi-Fi technology into Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn, figuring that players would enjoy having maps and units sent to them via the magic of the Internet. However, while some work was put into this element, it was eventually decided not to include it as Narihiro admitted, “difficulties with balance and technology kept the feature out of Goddess of Dawn.”

Never fear, though, because the wait for an online Fire Emblem community may not be too far away. On Goddess of Dawn, Yamagami commented:

This would be the first Fire Emblem for the Wii, so we decided to focus on single player and held back on Wi-Fi. However, for the next title, if we have the chance, we’d like to use it.

The trio of developers also disclosed further information with regard to the development process of Goddess of Dawn, notably Nintendo and Intelligent System’s decision to bring the series to the Nintendo Wii rather than the phenomenally successful Nintendo DS, Yamagami adding:

The Fire Emblem series began on the Famicom [short for Family Computer - the NES in Japan], so we’d generally like to release it on consoles. Also, it’s a game with many detailed parameters, so we want to put it on a television. However, we do feel that the SRPG genre is suited for the DS,

He also explained to Dengeki DS & Wii Style the reasoning behind the revelation that Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn would not utilise the Nintendo Wii’s motion sensing control features:

At the start of development, we didn’t know what controller would be included with the Wii. We began production by considering the classic controller default. Once we learned what would be included with the Wii system, we made it so that everything could be controlled with the Wiimote. However, we felt that controls like pointing and shaking of the remote were not applicable to Fire Emblem, so we held off on it.

Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn was released on February 22 this year in Japan, but no date has yet been set for the title’s appearance elsewhere in the world.

Wait, you mean I can’t point and click to move my units?

Wow, that’s pretty lame. Still looking forward to this though.
