Super Mario Galaxy and others dated in Japan
Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, has published a list of upcoming releases for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS, including a non-exact release date for what’s been touted as the spiritual sequel to the Nintendo 64’s Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy.
The popular videogaming publication has Super Mario Galaxy listed down for an October 2007 release, confirming Shigeru Miyamoto’s claims that the much-anticipated title would see the light of day before the end of the year - and that other territories will see the game released in 2007, too. Indeed, it would make terrific sense for Nintendo to release Super Mario Galaxy in North America, Europe and Australasia in December, just in time for the Christmas rush and guaranteeing massive sales figures (like that would be a problem anyway!).
The release schedule also includes the much-discussed Wii Health Pack (penned in for July 2007), a new Wii Channel that according to a Nintendo distributor who accidentally let slip on details recently, will measure your fitness levels before sending the results off to a hospital to be analysed. Nintendo has previously discussed inventing Wii Channels that help broaden the appeal of the console beyond that of games machine and towards something of a centralised feature in the home; a philosophy that Wii Health Pack may have the potential to further.
Other notable entries include Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, (December 2007) and the new Nintendo Wii hardware with added DVD playback functionality (late December 2007). The former will be the first time in history that two of videogaming’s biggest mascots will face off head-to-head in the same title together, while the latter has previously been confirmed as a Japan-only release.
Here’s the release schedule in full as reported at Wiipals.net:
- July 2007: Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Fuuketsu no Grimoire (NDS, Square Enix)
- July 2007: MushiKing Super Collection (Wii, Sega)
- July 2007: Wii Health Pack (Wii, Nintendo)
- July 2007: Mario Party 8 (Wii, Nintendo)
- August 2007: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates (NDS, Square Enix)
- October 2007: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, Nintendo)
- November 2007: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2 (NDS, Nintendo)
- November 2007: Dragon Quest IX (NDS, Square Enix)
- December 2007: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii/NDS, Sega)
- In late 2007: Wii with DVD playback (Nintendo)
- 2008: Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (Capcom)
There’s some big hitters in there besides those mentioned above, including Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS, marking the first time that the phenomenally popular Japanese RPG series will have an official sequel released on a handheld console. In a similarly drastic departure from tradition, the ninth Dragon Quest title will feature an action-orientated battle system (possible real-time combat) and co-operative multiplayer gaming for up to four players via the Nintendo Wi-Fi service - this is opposed to the long-established turn-based fighting of previous Dragon Quest games.
Which are you guys most looking forward to? …Except for Super Mario Galaxy, of course!
