Sega announces Ghost Squad for Wii

In the is as further proof that developers are putting their faith in the Nintendo Wii’s ability to replicate to actions of arcade light gun, Sega has announced that it is bringing its counter-terrorist, on-rails shooter, Ghost Squad to the console early next year, reports IGN.

The title will have players using the Wii remote as a “multi-purpose tool” as you act as the head of an elite terrorist-bashing unit, disposing of enemies, diffusing ticking bombs, and rescuing hapless members of the public who have been taken hostage or otherwise found themselves caught in the firing line. You’re actually part of the Global Humanitarian Operation and Special Tactics Squad (or Ghost Squad for short), set up in a last ditch attempt to restore peace as the Earth has become overrun by terrorist activity.

Gary Knight, European marketing director of Sega Europe said: “Ghost Squad utilises the Wii Remote perfectly as a light gun, resulting in the game being a total blast.”

As well as a single player mode which features 25 different weapon types, the title will include special machines as well as a multiplayer co-operative option for up to four players. In addition, you will be able to track your overall progress and compare it to others’ thanks to the Nintendo Wii’s online capabilities - in other words, there’ll be web-based leader boards.

“You’re not really going to shoot… are you?!

“Ghost Squad brings the classic light gun blaster experience that SEGA made popular in the arcades to the Wii,” said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president of marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. “With a more robust multiplayer experience than even the arcade version and numerous unlockable items and stages adding replay value, Ghost Squad will be the ultimate shooter experience for the Nintendo Wii console.”

Let’s just hope that Ghost Squad has the longevity to make it a worthwhile purchase. The arcade original only features three levels (two jungle missions and one onboard Air Force One), although there are multiple routes through each.

I love this game in the Arcade. Knowing I won’t have to keep putting pound after pound in with this version is great news!

Oh Yeah baby! - ANY shooter would be GREAT! I would like to see Silent Scope series as a release too, couldn’t be that hard to convert it …

Originally I was thinking that it reminds me of the Dreamcast shooters (unfortunately the graphics look to be on par with the DC too) then I realized it is made by Sega. While it is going to be fun to play a new Sega arcade (arcade usually = shallow, but fingers crossed) I hope it is going to be compatible with some sort of Wii light gun. I’m not really too excited to point and click my way through this game, kind of lame if you actually think about it.

I thought the Wii being easier to develop for would result in more variety and great games aka DS. However, it now seems that the Wii is just a way for developers to dump their lower quality titles and make a quick buck. Seriously, every soldier in the photo consists of 3 polygons and are going through the same animation sequence!

C’mon Nintendo, where is Metroid and online multiplayer! I got sick of OPERA locking up my system every 30sec and the WiiVote channel a very long time ago! Gimme something I can play more than an hour! (Yes, I have beaten Zelda)

(Not making fun of the system just challenging Nintendo:)
