Tomb Raider: Anniversary announced for Wii

Sony PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable owners have known now for a while that their consoles would be receiving Eidos’ Tomb Raider: Anniversary (released to celebrate 10 years since the launch of the series). Today, however, the publisher revealed that the Nintendo Wii would be receiving a “special version” of the same game.

According to CVG, Tomb Raider: Anniversary’s is already well underway for the Wii and has been for quite some time. Eidos brand manager Kathryn Clements said that Eidos wanted to create a “special version of Anniversary to appeal to Wii owners.”

Elaborating, Clements added, “The Wiimote and Nunchuck controller allows Wii gamers to control Lara in brand new, unique ways, and there are plenty of new features, to be revealed soon, which will ensure Anniversary really hits the spot.”

The title is being described as a semi-new adventure, which will feature more of the levels from the series’ original entry, while tweaked puzzle design and level structure (Peru, Greece, Egypt and Atlantis which featured in the 1996 version will all make a re-appearance) has both been worked in. The game’s aesthetics have also been given a spit and polish, meaning that the heavily polygonal figure and physical abilities of the title’s female protagonist will appear considerably improved thanks to title being supported by the Tomb Raider: Legend engine.

Happy birthday, dear Lara!

In an earlier interview, developer Crystal Dynamics’ Jason Botta explained why the decision had been made to create an updated compilation of Lara’s best bits had been made:

“We wanted to make something that was a tribute to a decade of support from all the fans, the Tomb Raider franchise and also as high a quality game as we could make on current-generation with the current existing technology that we had. With Tomb Raider Legend, we had a great game engine and a great team of people who worked on it so we wanted to sort of make a really solid good game, sort of a tribute - an homage to Tomb Raider 1,”

We wonder in what way the Wii controls will be implemented in order to make the Nintendo console version stand out from the rest. We’ll keep you posted!

Tomb Raider: Anniversary is released on June 1.

Yikes, she was hard enough to control on that ‘other’ console

The reason I had to keep upgrading my PC all those years ago …. But will the Wii version have the apeal of being able to see a drop of Laura’s sweat bead up and flow… um downhill? I can envision the controls tumbling and jumping around my family room :)
