Wii’s original downloads announcement soon?

We’ve reported a couple of times on a certain title called Impossible Mission in recent months. The first was the news that the game was arriving on the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS; the second was to inform you that the game, which originated on the Commodore 64 would be the first to be distributed through the Wii Shop Channel… and this one? To tell you that that it’s release isn’t far off, according to insider sources.

Speaking to Palgn, Impossible Mission developer, System 3’s Mark Cale detailed the situation:

“Impossible Mission would be one of the first titles we’re going to be launching on Wii, [that will] be available from retailers, and to download as well, and that’s where we’re going to be exploring what Nintendo can actually do in terms of downloadable content, and see if it can match Xbox Live.”

When asked about Impossible Mission appearing on the virtual Console, he said:

“I wouldn’t say Virtual Console, because they’re not actually calling it the Virtual Console, but in the next few months there will be various announcements I’m sure made by Nintendo that will offer users a system that will be similar to that of what Microsoft is offering at present, which is the ability to download content.”

The first original downloadable Wii game - and hopefully not the last!

Cale went on to explain that in order to support the upcoming distribution channels for Impossible Mission and all that follows it, Nintendo has had to “set up various systems,” adding that Microsoft is “years ahead” of the opposition.

“It really depends on when Nintendo are rolling out their strategy, which I expect will be within the next two months,” he speculated.

So, within the next eight weeks or so, we should hopefully know what Nintendo’s plans with regards to brand new downloadable content on the Wii will entail. Of course, it is interesting to note that whatever games are made available via whatever the new service is to be called, they’ll have to be fairly small in size unless Nintendo is willing to compromise on its current stance concerning SD memory cards. The machine’s relatively tiny 512MB internal memory (when compared to the gigabytes of hard disk space offered by the Microsoft Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) will surely not be enough to satisfy the storage needs of many gamers. At present, downloadable Virtual Console games cannot be played directly off an SD card, they must first be copied to the Wii’s internal memory - which takes an age.

Whatever the developments, we’ll keep you posted!
