Konami announces Contra 4 for DS
Konami has today announced that it is developing a new Contra title for the Nintendo DS, answering the prayers of many a fanatic of the series, which has not been given an update since Neo Contra on the Sony PlayStation 2 back in 2004.
The game, which will be released to mark the 20th anniversary of the quintessential action franchise promises to push 2D side-scrolling action in an all-new direction with a run and gun action that takes place across both of the handheld’s screens, allowing for frantic action in all directions as well as screen-filling boss encounters. In addition, new gameplay mechanics are planned.
One such a new item is the grappling hook accessory, which can be used to “avoid oncoming dangers or attack from a strategic vantage point [and] allows for new combat situations and dramatic set pieces that underscore the game’s adrenaline-soaked pedigree.”
Over to Konami:
“Contra 4 takes place two years after the events of Contra III: The Alien Wars. After saving earth from invasion by Red Falcon, Bill Rizer and Lance Bean are confronted with a new extraterrestrial menace: the terrifying Black Viper. Joined by hard-boiled mercenaries Mad Dog and Scorpion, the warriors must once again wage war against an entire army of invaders.”
The upcoming title will also allow two players to work together co-operatively against Black Viper’s army of vile alien forces and reclaim Earth for mankind.
Arguably, Contra’s best days were its releases around the time of the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES and Sega Mega Drive, so here’s hoping Contra 4 makes a return to the trends that made such titles so immensely popular.
Who’s excited?
