EA’s Spore [not] “delayed indefinitely” (updated!)

Electronic Arts’ Will Wright’s highly ambitious life simulator, Spore, looks like it won’t be arriving on the Nintendo DS for quite a while yet, thanks to information uncovered in a short statement released by the firm today.

According to Game Informer, Spore has been “”delayed indefinitely,”” an announcement that is likely to damage their hopes many a gamer looking forward to the much anticipated, ambitious create-a-universe project. Electronic Arts said that “Spore has slipped out of fiscal 08 and into fiscal 09″” in relation to the Game Informer report.

Let’s all wait some more for Spore…

Spore was originally a working title, suggested by developer Ocean Quigley, for the game which was first referred to by the general public as Sim Everything. Even though Sim Everything was a first choice name for Wright, the title Spore stuck. It’s development began way back in 2000, and it was eventually officially unveiled at E3 in 2005.

Wright’s baby has had its release date hinted that numerous times in the past, the most recent. Just last month, when at an Electronic Arts’ conference call for investors on May 8, 2007, CEO John Riccitiello said that the release of Spore is “…right on the bubble with Q4 [January–March 2008], if not for Q1 fiscal 09 [April–June 2008]”.

Now that today’s news has leaked out, we couldn’t tell you when Spore might ever see the light of day.

UPDATE:

News that Spore has been delayed indefinitely as reported yesterday by us via QJ and Game Informer have been quashed as “misinformation” by EA.

“There seems to be some misinformation flying around,” explained a rep in a phone interview with Next-Gen. “Nothing’s changed since our call on May 8, where [CEO] John Riccitello specifically said that we were moving Spore from fiscal ’08 to early fiscal ’09.”

During that May earnings call, Riccitello stated, “…Spore is a title we have enormous confidence in. I’ve had the chance to review the title three times in the my short return to EA and it looks fantastic. I will also tell you that it’s right up [to] the bubble in Q4 [of fiscal ‘08], if not sometime in early fiscal ‘09, so we don’t feel comfortable in forecasting it.”

Information about Spore being delayed “indefinitely” as repotred yesterday was misconsstrued, added an EA representative. “It’s the same information we said in May. Spore’s progressing and it looks great,” she added.

where does it say that spore’s been “delayed indefinitely” from EA? i call bullshit. “indefinitely” is not equivalent to “fiscal 09″.
