We’ve already seen the Wii’s third party accessories market flooded with all kinds of weird and wonderful inventions, from the sword and shield controller shell to a transparent screen designed specifically to protect your television from any mishaps that see a butter-fingered player’s Wii Remote flung into it. As far as we’re concerned, though, Rakuten’s Far Infrared wrist strap takes the biscuit.

The Japanese retailer has revealed information about a wrist strap for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS made from bio-ceramics that it claims will douse your wrist with far infrared rays. No, we didn’t know what they were either.

From what we read, far infrared’s benefits are far reaching, although we assume that Rakuten’s priorities lie in relation to Wii players’ health. In this area the infrared waves apparently remove toxins with mercury detoxification, which is often the cause at the core of many health problems. The technology is widely used in saunas, but also in piloting aircrafts, locating living beings through smoke and walls and surveillance of known or suspected criminals. So there you have it.

All in all, the wrist strap could result in gaining an improved immune functions, and in the Wii Remote’s case, a less likely chance you’ll sprain your wrist from playing for too long. We’re certainly not the people to clarify the far infrared wrist strap’s apparent health benefits, but if you’re curious enough to test it out, it’ll be available in Japan on July 20 for just ¥ 740 ($6.30 USD).
