Capcom removes Islamic phrase from Zak & Wiki

A week or two ago we reported that Nintendo had landed itself in a spot of bother about the inclusion of the word ’spastic’ in the UK release of Mario Party 8. Thankfully that’s all sorted, but now Capcom has come under fire for including the phrase “Allahu akbar” in their upcoming Nintendo Wii adventure, Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barboras’ Treasure.

Wii Fanboy reports that Capcom was responding to complaints from the Council on American-Islamic Relations about a sound sample in the game - “Allahu akbar” translates into “God is the greatest,” which they have now removed.

A spokesperson for Capcom said:

“We have already contacted the team working on the game, and the phrase has been removed from the game and will not be heard in future videos released to the public,” also noting that it had received multiple complaints about it already.”

CAIR communications coordinator, Amina Rubin added:

“We appreciated Capcom’s willingness to address Muslim concerns and applaud the company’s swift and appropriate actions.”

At least that was all sorted with the minimum of fuss. If you’re interested, you can see the suspect sound bite for yourself in the video above.
