Opera app. gives way to 4 player Wii browser games

Opera, the firm behind the Internet Explorer rival and the Wii Internet Channel browser has today published the application programming interface (API) for the Wii Remote. Don’t have a clue what that has to do with anything? Why, read on and find out.

In simple terms, the development means that web programmers will be able to design pages using JavaScript that can then retrieve information from multiple Wii Remotes at once. This includes button presses, rotation, distance from the screen and of course, the pointer position. The technology is also compatible with the Nunchuck attachment.

According to the boffins over at Opera, the API could be used to create simple games using a combination of techno-wizardry supported by the browser.

At present, most online Flash games compatible with the Wii Remote are limited to just the position of the pointer, but hopefully this will all change in the near future. We can hear the cogs of homebrew developers spinning wildly as we speak.

Never experienced any Wii gaming via the Opera Internet Browser? Check out WiiCade for some examples or try Opera’s latest 2 player demonstration, Wii Roll.
