IGN reports via the Japanese news service Nikkei that Nintendo will begin to offer new and original games for download on the Nintendo Wii from early 2008. So far downloadable offerings have only been available for retro fans via the Virtual Console.

Initially the downloadable offerings will focus on the likes of simple puzzle and ‘edutainment’ titles, but will later hopefully expand into action games and other larger productions. Pricing for the miniature gaming offers are estimated to be below 1000 Japanese Yen (approximately $8 USD).

As Nintendo is also a third party publisher, chances are that third party developers will also get a look in, although no details on that front have yet been divulged.
