After the announcement of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 in June, Nintendo Wii fans were left feeling more than a little deflated after the firm seemed to have omitted plans for a version of the game on Nintendo’s newest home console. However, at its press conference at the Games Conference in Leizpig today a Wii version was finally confirmed.

The developer has said that the Nintendo Wii version was in the works and that it had undergone a “radical re-think” in order that it makes proper use of the console’s motion-sensitive control options.

Apparently the game will be programmed so that gamers will be able to control every facet of their footballing team, whether they are on the ball or not. The Remote will also allow you to direct players into space or to distribute the ball (presumably by pointing).

“We are extremely keen to introduce PES to as wide a selection of football fans as possible, and the Wii and its unique abilities are a perfect fit,” commented Jon Murphy, Pro Evolution Soccer Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “The potential for PES on the format is enormous, and we look forward to a very exciting start to 2008.”

Our minds are buzzing with ideas about how Konami might use the Wii’s controls to make the game intuitive to play. It is bound to feel strange after so many years playing Pro Evoultion Soccer with a traditional control pad, but like so many new gaming experiences on Wii, we’re sure well get used to it.

And now that FIFA has a rival on Wii, it’ll be brilliant to see how the two companies’ approach differs.
