EA discusses Boogie on Nintendo’s Wii
Electronic Arts has already been pushing hard with its support of Nintendo’s Wii, with SSX Blur coming exclusively to the innovative system, as well as Wii-specific versions of The Godfather, Madden and Tiger Woods. Its latest project is a rhythm game called Boogie, which launches in Europe on 31st August and the company recently spoke about the new title.
Jean-Charles Gaudechon, Game Designer at Electronic Arts was quizzed by the guys over at Cubed³ about various aspects of the game’s development, and to start with Gaudechon discussed how hard the team worked to “nail the controls and great graphics”, stating that whilst all platforms have their respective challenges, the team loved working on Wii.
For those unaware of exactly what Boogie is and what it offers in terms of modes and songs, clarification can be found below:
“Boogie offers 5 main game modes. You can dance, sing, and create your music video. There is a story mode for each of the 5 available characters and a multiplayer mode where you can challenge a friend in a dance-off. We also have a co-op mode where one player sings and another dances. [ The game offers ] 39 songs which are all covers. We really focused on the quality of these cover versions – we’re really happy with the end result.
“You will be able to make your own music videos. Players can express their creativity, after recording their dance and/or karaoke performance you can add many different visual effects, create unique camera angles and add custom text for a music video that is uniquely yours.”
As for who the game will appeal to, EA seems to not be focusing on one particular market sector, instead widening the net to encompass “anyone, from non-gamers to experienced ones.” As for whether or not we will see more of Boogie on a regular basis, as with Guitar Hero and Singstar, Gaudechon remained coy, simply stating “Boogie is a great game and we’re confident it will make a lot of people sing and dance… that is our focus right now.” He even completely dodged the subject of the game coming to other formats and the fact that Boogie has repeatedly appeared on recent Nintendo release lists as coming to DS as well!
Finally, the matter of the Wii Balance Board was brought up, given that it seems ideal for dancing on as well as doing exercises. Will EA be making use of it in future rhythm games?
“These new peripherals are really great innovations for gaming.. But again our focus is on the first Boogie release right now. You can count on us for making the right decisions when it comes to offering a fun experience on our Wii titles.”

It’s a shame. Although I was really looking forward to playing this, I don’t think I’ll bother as it seems to get slated in every review. It’s a shame no-one told EA earlier. The last thing they need is poor sales after playing late catch up with the Wii’s runaway success.
